Analyse of Act1 Scene1

During the opening of Act one , Algernon is the one leading the topics , and is the dominant speaker. The audience notices this when Moncrieff brings the subject of "Bunburiyst" up,  which makes the audience understand what the next part of the play is going to consist of.This is an example of coinage. This first makes the audience bewildered. However later on they understand that the relationship between the speakers is really close and that has created that sort of effect.Another thing to consider is , that this technique used by Wilde illustrates their status and their relationship to the reader.

Algernon really stresses about some particular words for multiple reasons. As an actor , he emphasizes some words to the audienceFor example as listed above the word "Bunburyst".Consequently this will lead to the audience genuinely concentrating on some specific words and realize how prominent they are going to be in that part of the play when used by Wilde.Another device utilized by Wilde is the use of Prosodic features when some words are used. The stage directions illustrates it to the readers "Sententiously".This defines the personality of Algernon or the way he feels at that specific moment which is then clarified to the audience. Moreover they will deduce of what the next part of the play will constitute of and will feel less

Another important key thing in the play is the manner in which both characters approach each other while communicating and how this later on creates an impact on the audience.Algernon and Jack being really close friends, will communicate in a really relaxed manner without any doubt hence this will be informal language.Furthermore the actors familiarize with each other. This is demonstrated by the multiple times when Jack call Algernon "Algy".This confirms to the audience their liaison.

My selected part that i would like to discuss:
Page 17 , Jack's and Gwendolen's conversation.

During that conversation which is taking place after Lady Bracknell and Algernon left to visit the music room, Gwendolen and Jack discuss their feelings toward each other. This leads to Jack proposing her to marry him.

Throughout the conversation , Gwendolen seems to be the dominant speaker. The reader is alerted by this ,when he discovers that the lenght of her text  is certainly longer than Jack's.By the content of their discussion the audience can also establish that this is an emotional and unique moment in both characters's life , which will lead them both to use a high inflection in their voices. This is caused by the nerves and happiness that they are enduring."In addition this is confirmed by one of the stage direction labelled as "Glibly" in one of Gwendolen's lines. This once again ratifies the fervent feeling which sets the mood and atmosphere in the auditorium. The audience comprehend this and deduce that this is really effective and dexterous from Wilde.

The purpose of that specific part of the play(why is it written) is to illustrate to the audience and "story tell" what the current situation is about, moreover  the relationship between the two characters. In this stage, the audience finds out that Gwendolen and Jack are about to come to a pact in their relationship.Regarding to the use of para linguistic Jack is kneeling on his knee while proposing to Gwendolen. This will have a much more powerful effect to the audience than verbal speech. The reason for that is , the kneeling down is a symbolic gesture.Aforementioned this is a prominent part in the selected section, because it will make the audience understand the whole concept of their dialogue.

Jack is the character that sets the topic. He nervously says :" Miss Fairfax since i met you i have admired more than any girl.. "This is a sudden change of topic as they commenced by talking about the weather. This is important to the audience's notion on the characters. This establish the personality of Jack to the audience. The audience find out that Jack is a very nervous character , however he prefers to talk about the thing he came to talk about hence he is serious about  it.A different moment where Wilde uses para linguistics is when the couple are having physical contact to approve their love such as mouth to mouth contact or hugs. This reveals to audience Gwendolen's and Jack's affection and feelings towards  each other which is crucial in the understand of the the section that I have selected.

Both characters are turn taking during their conversation. They both listen to each other in a scrupulous way.an example of this is when states..Jack:"i do mean something else" Gwendolen:"I thought so. In fact, i am never wrong"This is a sign of their  way of appreciating each other , and really paying attention of what is being said which is crucial in a relationship. The manner in which both character are approaching each other is formal. The way Wilde represents it when Jack calls Gwendolen "Miss Fairfax in sign of respect.

The last device utilized by Wilde that i would like to discuss is the use of tone by each characters.During the proposal , both characters are most likely to use a really earnest tone of voice as they are describing how they feel.A particular moment where Jack could use a truthful voice is when Jack says to Gwedolen: since i met you i have admired more than any girl..I have ever met since i met you.

So i conclude that in this moment in the play , Gwendolen and Jack's performance play a crucial role in the understanding of the piece.Wilde uses different techniques to maximize the understanding of the audience such as Para linguistics , turn taking , tone of voices , inflections and manner. All have significant impacts on the audience in different ways.Wilde is full of success in presenting it as i felt no trouble imagining it in my head.

Analysis of The Importance of being "Earnest"

The Book "The Importance of being Earnest" by Oscar Wilde show a really interesting way to represent different statuses or classes. This book which was written in 1894 during the Victorian periods when the different in classes were prominent The most important being the King , to the servant. Oscar Wilde starts off really well to establish some bewilderment by giving the title a polysemic name.Yet the term "Earnest" having more than one meaning adds up to the confusion.Earnest doesn't make things easier to the reader.Earnest could be either a name , or the term Earnest meaning sincere. The word "Importance" can also be interpreted in different ways.Importance could be the importance in class within the hierarchy or be the importance of "Earnest in the play" if a character is named that. However the title is not the only thing that makes the reader question himself. The sub-title A Trivial Comedy for serious people"This entail in the reader questioning himself once again. This subtitle is giving the reader a lot of information , one of them is , the play will be a comedy , the second one being that is play could be enjoyed by everyone , not only by trivial people but for serious people. This gives the reader a promising start to the play.

In addition , Oscar Wilde utilizes the cast list to show a major different in classes.Wilde uses prefix and suffix to show some of their classes.Rev meaning Reverent were really important people in the society during that Era.Furthermore the reverent is even more respected because of his academic excellence. The letters D.D in the end of his name which stand for Doctor of Divinity was not an easy caliber to reach so because of that he is a distinguished character in the society and is undoubtedly respected .Another character that makes me sceptical is Miss Prism.Firstly Wilde gives us the idea that she is single. This is an interesting fact to give to the reader as she might be the only one in the play being in that situation , therefore she has a really different status to others.Another thing to consider is that Miss Prism is also the Governess, so she is without any doubt responsible and could also be the leader in the play. The two last characters in the cast list that makes me anxious is the two servants Lane and Merriman. These two characters are unquestionably the lowest in rank in the play. This is presented by Wilde in a very observant way. Both characters do not have a second name. This leads to the reader instinctively guessing that the servants are low in class.

In the first dialogue between Moncrieff and Lane , classes are showed by the use of language by both characters.Lane calls Moncrieff "Sir" that let the reader know already the difference in classes between the two characters.Moncrieff also demontrate how prominent he is by his actions during the dialogue. He inspects Lane's sandwiches carefully meaning that he likes things to be done carefully and once again this confirms his rank in the society.Lane is also critisized by Moncrieff during their speech. He says : "Lane's view on marriage seem somewhat lax.Really if the lower orders don't set us a good example , what on earth is the use of them? they seem , as a class to have absolutely no sense of moral responsability"this monologue describes how Moncrieff feels of Lane even though he respects him.
